Airtel Confirms Launching 4G Network This Month In Kolkata

Airtel 4G Services Kolkata Launch. First In India.
We’re surprised! We earlier thought it was Mukesh Ambani’s Reliance Industries preparing to be the first one to launch 4G telecom services in India. But Indian Express confirms that it’s Bharti Airtel that’s launching 4G services in Kolkata this month! Airtel’s CEO, Sanjay Kapoor confirmed the news that Airtel is launching their LTE (Long Term Evolution) services this month. Mr. Kapoor was speaking at the GSMA event in Kolkata. While we still struggle getting the right download speeds with our 3G networks, Airtel’s becoming the first telecom operator in India to offer 4G. The 4G technology offers wireless download speeds up to 100 Mbps.

Airtel had appointed Nokia Siemens Networks (NSN) to deploy the LTE network in Maharashtra circle using TD-LTC. But it looks like Kolkata will be the first city to experience 4G speeds. Airtel had won the bid to offer high speed wireless broadband services in  Kolkata, Maharashtra, Punjab and Karnataka circles back in 2010. Airtel’s been alloted 20 Mhz of BWA spectrum in 2.3 Ghz frequency band which can be used to offer 4G.
The exact launch date of the service is yet to be confirmed and we’re tracking the news updates. If 4G services start rolling out in India, we can surely expect the prices of 3G to fall down in coming weeks. What do our readers think about rollout of 4G services in India? Is it too early or a little late?
